Fellow Alumni
& Friends,
It has been a little over three months since our reunion
and I can say that the 26th Annual Carver High School Alumni &
Friends Association Reunion is one that I will long remember. Each event was
well attended. We had people who were there for the first time and those who
have never missed a reunion.
William Fennell, a member of the class of 1967, was in
attendance for the first time. Throughout the weekend, when I saw William, he
expressed his regrets for never attending a reunion and vowed to never miss
another. To those of you who have never attended a reunion, my charge to you is
to come once and you will probably feel as William does.
Robert and Leora Brock informed me at the picnic that
they have made all 26 reunions. We talked about reasons why people attend and it
always came down to seeing old friends, making new acquaintances, and sharing
ideas about how to make the Association better.
There are many reasons why we need to make this
organization the best it can be. Our communities, especially our children and
senior citizens, need to see this organization come together to bring programs
and activities that will help and encourage all our citizens to be their
best.
We need to continue to support fundraising efforts for
our scholarship fund. We have many intelligent children who need help going to
college. This organization has been helping students financially since its
formation in 1982 and I hope that those of us that have been blessed to go to
college and are able will continue to help.
As mentioned doing the reunion, I will give a $500.00
scholarship next year in the name of my mother, Nellie Southerland Williams. My
mother was a founding member of this Association and the Mayor Pro-Tem of Mount
Olive at the time of her death. I feel that this is a way for me to honor my
mother and assist some youth person fulfill their dream of going to college. I
hope some of you will do the same so will can continue the rich tradition of
helping our youth.
We need to step up our efforts in respect to our building
project. During the reunion, Dr. Wade Kornegay identified the formation of three
task forces to help us accomplish our goal of building a facility that will
bring in programs to help better our community. We still need members on these
task forces, especially the “Grants and Funding Solicitation” task force. Please
call me to volunteer or to simply find out more about what you can do to
help.
I’m also asking that we continue to pledge and honor our
pledges towards our building project. Each dollar makes a difference so if you
have pledged and honored your pledge, thank you. If you have not pledged or
honored your pledge, please do so.
If you have fundraising ideas or any ideas to make our
organization better, please let us know.
Until next time –“Keep the Carver Pride
Alive”.
Always A Tiger,
Al Southerland, Class of ‘68
